CoverGirl's first CoverBoy: How can it be? Teen makeup artist James Charles breaks beauty barriers, and becomes a social media star.
James Charles will start out as the face of "So Lashy!", the brand's latest mascara launch, and he'll also be used in ads and commercials. Oh, and he also gets to hang out with Katy Perry. And he's still only 17. Impressed yet? We certainly are.
Teen makeup artist James Charles
James Charles, a 17 year old high school boy is aspiring to be a make-up artist... which is a respected profession primarily the entertainment industry. It's not at all unusual for males to be in this profession. In the course of a year, teen makeup artist James Charles has gone from starting an Instagram account showing off his impressive work to getting shoutouts from Katy Perry for making history.
On Tuesday, the pop star helped announce that Charles has become the first male to represent the CoverGirl brand. Meet @JamesCharles: makeup artist, boundary breaker, and the newest COVERGIRL! Spread the word by regramming using #COVERGIRLJames.
James Charles CoverGirl's CoverBoy
"All CoverGirls are role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe, and redefining what it means to be beautiful," the company said in a statement to a news agency. "James Charles is no exception. One year ago, he boldly chose to launch his Instagram to the world, using transformative, dynamic makeup looks to showcase the many facets of his personality, serving as an inspiration to anyone who might have been afraid to do the same".
My opinion:
It's a little bizarre for my taste. When I was 17, I was more concerned with what was happening in Vietnam and whether I was going to be drafted into the U.S. Army or not. However, facing the draft board back then with mascara, eye liner and lipstick would almost guarantee a 4F exemption.
The boy knows the craft and apparently quite well. What is a little unusual is that he's modeling women's make-up on himself. The COVERGIRL company is applauding and celebrating James Charles as brave and courageous for breaking boundaries and serving as an inspiring role model. Sure, I understand what they're saying... "you work hard enough, you can be whatever you want to be"... I'd stop far short of crossing gender lines, that's just me though.
