Do you try it in a cheaper version first before you do a BIFL item?

I have been attempting to define my own style, while attempting to purchase items that I want to have forever. I'm ditching the notion to purchase things just because they are on sale and "hey... It doesn't look bad!"... Only to have it clutter my closet with a bunch of other things.

In the last 6 months, I have really pared down on my clothing and shoe collection. To add to that, I am 30 now and realize I should no longer purchase things that a 13 year old would buy. I am a professional, and I need to appear that way.

... Which brings me to the point where I am looking at BIFL items, and most recently shoes. I would really like to have some quality shoes that I can have for multiple seasons. The most I have gotten out of a pair of shoes may be 3 years or so and that may be because it is falling apart or I just got tired of it (aka, it fell out of trend).

Keeping in mind that I want to appear professional, yet comfortable (I can not tolerate heels any longer), I have come to a list of possible BIFL shoes that may serve me many years. This includes: Chelsea boots, Oxford shoes, and loafers (penny or tassel).

I'm afraid, though. What if I spend $300-400 on each of these BIFL shoes and find that I do not feel comfortable with how it looks on me? What if I can't seem to "match my shoes" when putting together an outfit? That has always been a difficult for me, anyway. So, that brings me to the question. Has anyone purchased a cheaper version of something you want to BIFL? Seems to defeat the whole purpose, really.
