Male modeling advice: agency representation to walk runway NYFW

Hi Popteen models,

Questions around NYFW and modeling in general (male).

I've never modeled before but told often I could be one from friends and strangers alike.

I've got the stats of the modeling industry and have a unique look, though maybe underweight.

Wanted to toss on some muscle mass before approaching modeling agencies. Toning up is a slow process though, so I'd expect visual changes in my build to take through the end of the year at least.

Is approaching agencies at the start of next year too late to get me on the runway for NYFW 2017? (looks like Men's starts Jan 30)

Is it poor timing to submit to an agency around the new year? Will they all be too preoccupied with NYFW? Or will they be scrambling to find the right fit, so maybe I'll make an appearance just at the right time?

Should I just go for it now? I have semi visible abs, but not quite at the level of what I've seen perusing agency boards. Would they still accept me all else looking okay and just tell me to tone up? Or should I do so before approaching?

Should I shave my body hair when submitting?

I think a light beard looks good, but clean shaven my cheekbones look more defined. What should I go with?

Was planning on IMG, Ford, Wilhelmina, etc. Are they okay with newcomers via online submission? Does going to an open call increase chances (is personality factored in?)?

Does a reference from a model currently at the agency make a difference? Can models even refer their friends, is that a thing?

Is going with a boutique agency at first a better approach than straight for rollin' with the big players?

Do I need to have agency representation to walk NYFW? If not, is it okay to reach out to designers on my own? Who on their team should I speak to if so?

Appreciate all you can answer!
